Arrival Day
Begin your stay in Witney with a tour of The Wychwood Brewery. Home of Hobgoblin discover how all their beers are brewed, from the picking of the ingredients through to the finished product. Sample a range of the beers and visit the brewery shop to pick up a souvenir or two of your visit.
Join us back at The Blue Boar for dinner in the restaurant and enjoy your complimentary bottle of prosecco with your meal. After dinner, head into the bar to enjoy a night cap before retiring to your room for the night.
Day Two
After a restful night’s sleep and a cooked breakfast, venture out to explore the history of the market town of Witney.
One of the largest market towns in Oxfordshire, much of Witney’s history is connected to the town’s connections with woollen trade, and you’ll even find the personal touch of a Witney Blanket in each of our boutique hotel rooms. In the heart of the town you’ll discover The Witney Blanket Hall which is open to visitors on Wednesdays to Saturdays. Built in the early 18th century, the hall set out the rules of trade and also for over a century was responsible for weighing and measuring every blanket woven in the town.
At the end of Church Green stands the impressive spire of St Mary’s Church, a reflection of the importance of the town In the Middle Ages. The current church dates back to the 13th century and incorporates the mortuary chapel of the Wenman family, one of the towns wealthiest wool merchants.
Just to the east of Church Green in the grounds of Mount House discover the remains of the Bishop’s Palace. Part of the large estate owned by the Bishops of Winchester, archaeological excavation has unearthed these medieval buildings which were frequently visited by Bishops and royalty.
Just off the High Street sits The Witney and District Museum. Run by volunteers, visitors to the museum can explore the history of Witney and the surrounding area. On the upper floor in the Bartlett-Taylor Gallery, the museum offers a programme of seasonal and temporary exhibitions.
Alternatively spend the morning at Cogges Manor Farm, located a short walk from the town centre. Set around the Grade II listed manor house and farm buildings and with 15 acres of land including farmyard, play areas and gardens, there’s plenty for visitors of all ages to explore.
If you’re someone that enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, lace up your walking boots and head to Witney Lake and Meadows, known locally as Duck Lake or Ducklington Lake. Located to the south of the town, this 37 hectare country park incorporates meadows and wet grassland as well as a nature reserve at the south end of the lake. The 2km route around the lake also joins up with a public footpath which runs through the country park to the east of the town and links up with Cogges Manor Farm.
For guests looking to explore further afield, Witney has excellent connections to Oxford. Buses depart regularly from Market Square and can have you to the city centre in under 45 minutes. Spend the day taking in the sites and history of the University, museums and galleries. Alternatively take in the sites of the city from the River Cherwell on a punt of rowing boat.
Day Three
After a breakfast to set you up for the day, venture out and explore the Cotswolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty spanning almost 800 square miles and with picturesque towns and villages in amongst superb scenery including Stow-on-the-Wold (18 miles), Bourton-on-the-Water (20 miles), and Moreton-in-Marsh (22 miles).
Fancy a tour of the Cotswolds from some locals? Undiscovered Cotswolds, run by Ian and Graham, provide small and private guided day long tours of the Cotswolds to share more of the region with visitors, including a few hidden gems.
After a day taking in some of the most beautiful sites that England has to offer, spend a relaxing evening back at the Blue Boar and indulge with two course meal in our restaurant.
Final Day
Enjoy a lazy start to your final morning at The Blue Boar with a leisurely breakfast and making the most of your late checkout. Before making your way home make the time to take in one of Oxfordshire’s most historical attractions, Blenheim Palace birth place of Winston Churchill. Discover the state rooms, wander through the formal gardens or take a trip on the Miniature train. Less than 10 miles from The Blue Boar, Blenheim Palace was a gift from Queen Anne to the 1st Duke of Marlborough in the 18th Century and is still, to this day, the principal residence of the Marlborough family.
